A Raw Professional Athlete and a Raw Vegan Nursing Mom

by JodyCalvi January 8, 2014 | 2:06PM
Alex and Milana - are healthy, vibrant demonstrations of living the raw food lifestyle. He is a professional athlete, she is a nursing mom and as a family they came to Farm of Life for a Costa Rican vacation. Alex shares about his process of being a professional ice hockey player who transitioned from a meat-based diet to vegetarianism, then veganism and eventually to raw food. He thrives physically without needing protein powders or supplements. Milana shares about eating raw vegan while pregnant and breast-feeding. One day her baby's eye's had mucous in it, after she had eaten a cooked vegan meal, and from that point forward she has been 100% raw food breast-feeding mom... and she also, intuitively, practices what is called Attachment Parenting.

Harvesting the Queen Bee and Medicinal Honey

by JodyCalvi January 8, 2014 | 2:04PM
Farm of Life harvested honey bees from our primary forest and moved the nests up to the farm proper..it was a delicate process that required giving the bees amnesia so that they forgot the location of their original nest. The Melapona bees are stingless and their honey is the most medicinal! We harvested 2 types - the Mariola and Baracino - who now have honey box homes at Farm of Life. Footage of the nests themselves - with egg-shapes and spiral staircase, full of mineral rich honey, wax and bee pollen.

Harvesting Medicinal Honey at Farm of Life, Costa Rica

by JodyCalvi January 8, 2014 | 1:45PM
Our first honey harvest at Farm of Life, Costa Rica. Mariola honey is medicinal - good for eyes and wounds. The bees do not have stingers and are super friendly. They produce only small quantities of honey, so we harvest honey only 2-3 times a year, and this was our first time. Very exciting! We harvested bee pollen too. We are not professionals and have lots to learn about bee keeping and harvesting.
